This is probably a name you’ve heard of by now, considering how many people are raving about them. And so they should! Alt-J released their debut album, An Awesome Wave, a few months back and it is very impressive. Their quirky, arty music is very individual but I really like it. The lyrics are strange and twisted, the plaintive guitar riffs are intertwined with bewitching vocals and the hip-hop drums hold each song together like glue.
If you’re a little confused about the name, it was taken from the command key on a mac computer to produce a delta sign: ∆, although the name is pronounced Alt-J. As bassist Gwil Sainsbury explains, “in mathematical equations it’s used to show change.” Clearly they like triangles as well, as frontman Joe Newman sings on Tessellate: “Triangles are my favourite shape / three points where two lines meet.”
Already nominated for a Mercury Prize and having played at the likes of Reading and Leeds Festival, Alt-J are definitely ones to watch.
