I’ve been a bit slow to catch onto Speedy Ortiz, the Northampton four-piece snowballing into indie-fame off the back of their wonderful debut LP Major Arcana. No Below starts off as a loping waltz, vulnerable with the simple guitar riff following the quavering, vulnerable vocals of Sadie Dupuis. It builds gradually and spirals into grungy guitar hooks, yet Dupuis’ vocals and lyrics still steal the show, a homage to childhood and old friends. It’s softer and subtler than their earlier release Tiger Tank, and I’d be tempted to place this track next to recent offerings from Waxahatchee. Expect big things from this band. Listen and fall in love below.
