I was contacted this week by Irish newcomers Slow Riot, who are making melancholy post-punk sounds that are very very similar to one of my favourite recent bands, Blaenavon. Their track Cooper’s Dream is one long crescendo of shoegaze, omnipresent bass and a whole lot of cymbals. The initially sparse guitar is reminiscent of The XX, the sedate vocals like Matt Berninger on a quiet day. Despite this, it remains wholly bleak and despondent for most of the track, but in a haunting and almost self-indulgent kind of way. I wait excitedly for their next release, but in the meantime you can check out their track below.
